A residence permit in Latvia may be issued to a foreign citizen on the basis of family reunification with relatives residing in the country.
This option is often used by spouses, children, parents, and other family members who wish to move to Latvia and live together with a family member or visit them regularly without the need for a visa.
The application process requires proof of family ties, compliance with legal requirements, and preparation of the necessary documentation.
We help clients understand the eligibility conditions and provide support at every stage of the process — from the initial consultation and assessment of the grounds to document preparation and receiving a decision.
The basis for obtaining a residence permit may include the following categories of relatives:
Spouse and children
A residence permit may be issued to the spouse, as well as minor and adult children.
A residence permit can be granted to family members of a person who is a citizen of Latvia, a non-citizen of Latvia, or a foreigner holding a residence permit in Latvia.
Parents
Parents of a Latvian citizen, non-citizen, or a foreigner holding a residence permit in Latvia may obtain a residence permit to live together with the family.
Other relatives
A residence permit may also be issued to relatives up to the third degree of kinship in the direct line and up to the second degree of kinship in the collateral line (for example: parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and other close relatives).
To obtain a residence permit, it is necessary to confirm family relationships, provide proof of accommodation, and demonstrate sufficient financial means for living in Latvia.
Since each family situation may have its own specifics, it is important to assess the eligibility grounds in advance and properly prepare all required documents.
Many foreign nationals planning to obtain a residence permit in Latvia encounter questions already at the initial stage:
— what are the conditions for obtaining a residence permit
— what requirements are imposed on the applicant
— what documents need to be prepared
— how long the application process takes
— how much the documentation and processing cost
The answers to these questions largely depend on the legal basis under which the residence permit is requested.
Professional support helps to avoid mistakes, save time, and go through the residence permit application process calmly and with confidence.

The residence permit application through family reunification follows several consecutive stages. Depending on the circumstances, the procedure may vary slightly, but the main stages of the process remain broadly the same.
At the first stage, we discuss the client’s situation and assess the possibility of obtaining a residence permit on the basis of family reunification.
We analyse the grounds for the application, the legal requirements, and the list of documents needed to prove the family relationship.
Once the grounds are determined, the document preparation stage begins. We advise the client in detail on the list of documents that must be prepared on their side.
At the same time, we prepare the legal part of the application package — questionnaires, applications, and other required forms.
All documents are prepared in accordance with legal requirements and the established practice for reviewing residence permit applications.
Once the documents have been prepared, an application for the approval of the letter of invitation is submitted in accordance with the established procedure.
Once the letter of invitation has been approved, the main set of documents for the residence permit application is submitted.
At this stage, documents confirming the grounds for obtaining the residence permit are submitted, along with the required personal and financial documents, proof of sufficient funds, proof of accommodation, and other documents required by law.
After the full set of documents has been submitted, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs of Latvia reviews the documents provided and makes a decision on the case.
The review period depends on the selected processing option and the state fee paid.
At this stage, the submitted documents are checked. If necessary, additional information or documents may be requested.
We stay in contact with the migration authority, respond promptly to any requests, and keep the client informed about the progress of the document review.
Once a positive decision has been made, the applicant arrives in Latvia. At this stage, biometric data are registered and the residence permit card is issued.
We support the client at every stage of obtaining a residence permit and help them go through the entire process — from the first consultation to the final result — calmly and confidently with our professional support.
